The Cock Crowed

She remembered,

no more cuts, no more bleeding

She burned the last ember,

ashes to ashes, wings receding

She reached for heaven

but the hand me down was hell

She swallowed the venom

like a good southern belle

She was never meant to be whole,

the same old story, same rocky road

She missed her heart, her trusting soul,

as she listened,

the cock crowed

She closed her eyes finding her way,

the salty water like a cold rain

She went numb as night turned to day,

no more wonder, no more pain

She wandered there for hours,

through the dream into the nightmare

She hid in quiet towers

until the monster disappeared

She looked out at the lay of the land

through that window at the top

She saw the foundations of sand

where she once believed was rock

She blew upon the stars

as they fell out of the sky

She learned to love the dark

and there, to never question why

She reached and touched the moon,

wiped the sorrow from her face

She felt the arrow as it passed through,

no more leather, only lace

She knew the path went in a circle,

the length she couldn’t measure

She thought love was immortal

but it was to be like buried treasure

She didn’t know how to find the map,

why the storms always blew and churned

She placed the book onto her lap,

that page never to be turned

She bound herself in the ink,

wrote in braille upon her skin

She left her fingertips to think

against the cold hard steel and pin
